Code for stretching

Clues for the mechanical signals needed for tissue elongation can be derived from the viscoelastic properties of the musculoskeletal tissues. For effective stretching the manual therapy techniques should contain the following elements of adequate tensional forces, adequate duration and repetition.

Tensional forces should be within the late elastic region to early plastic region of tissues.

Duration should be performed slowly and maintained to allow for viscoelastic changes to take place.

Repetitive stretching is more likely to activate the long-term adaptive elongation process.

It is important to note that in many cases even when individuals stretch for a few weeks once they stop the muscle returns to its original functional length within two to three weeks.

My Massage with Andrew

I have had lower back pain on and off since I lifted something beyond my lifting capability and put my back out some 15 years ago. I am 46 now and rather more stiff now that I am in my peri-menopause.

I had my massage with Andrew in the hope that I might get some light relief from excrutiating lower back pain which has been decapacitating me now for about a month. This past month has been different from the normal pain in that it has been much sharper, like blades piercing the muscle. It has been hard to stand up straight and I have a feeling of numbness and slight coldness from time to time.

I must say my massage with Andrew definitely helped me. He heated the area up first with oil and movement, by which time I began to relax more than I had for a month or more. He then massaged all along the length of the back feeling out pockets of stress or "knots" as we lay people call them> He really did locate the knots very accurately and seemed to "disolve" them and made them actually disappear. It was agreat mixture of pain and pleasure.

Andrew then continued to massage quite strongly along the length of the back upto the neck where again he untangled more knots which was really an immensse relief.

He then moved down the lower back finding the most tender area where he proceeded to massage gently.

He then gave me the "arm massage" all over my back from neck down to the lower back and that gave the whole exercise a feeling of completeness.

I hadn't slept properly for a month and I really am quite convinced that Andrew's massage was reposible for my great night's sleep that night.

He's great!
